I got the chance for an early watch on this (it comes out later this week). I love me some found-footage horror, but I’m usually disappointed since I know what I’m looking for. This was at least a solid B+. A little Blair Witch Project to start with, but never devolves into endless shrieking and swearing at each other. The characters let stress get to them, sure, but it’s tolerable. I can’t say I’m entirely satisfied with the ending but I don’t regret watching it.
Regarding what I’m looking for in found-footage, a film will ideally answer these questions.
- Why are they filming this?
- Who is holding the camera?
- How did the footage get out?
- Who edited it?
This movie answers two out of these four, but those two are really 80% of the film’s success. Like science fiction and fantasy, found-footage doesn’t often hold up if you look at it too closely, just don’t. Enjoy the spooky movie.
