The trailers made me nervous as they played up the camp. I went in hoping it wouldn’t be goofy. It was not goofy, but neither was it what I expected.
To be upfront, this is not a horror movie at all. James Wan said he made M3GAN (2022) because people kept saying he makes scary doll movies and since he was known for it, he wanted to actually make one (Annabelle is a doll, but she doesn’t do anything). With that out of his system, he moved on to other things and Blumhouse went forward with this sequel which is a straight-up sci-fi action thriller. Zero horror. Zero terror. Plenty of scientific exposition, choreographed fight scenes, a little humor, a little drama. It was good for what it was, but is not a horror movie.
It did “AI is the greatest threat to the world” better than both of the latest Mission: Impossible movies, but Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) did “I want to be a real boy” better than this film. Violet McGraw continues to be an excellent actress. I look forward to her bright career.
