One of my many favorite moments from Avengers: Endgame (2019) was when Nebula and Rhodey go to Morag to retrieve the Power Stone. She sticks her robotic arm through the forcefield and grabs it. She’s then embarrassed at the damage which highlights her largely synthetic body. She says to Rhodey, a paraplegic, disabled veteran, “I wasn’t always like this.” He gently replies, “Me, neither. But we work with what we got.”
Thunderbolts* is about these B-list characters who are all less than what they once were, and are working with what they got. This is much less a popcorn movie than much of the MCU, and if you’re emotionally stunted or repressed you probably won’t enjoy it. It’s fantastic for what it is, and I really hope you go and see it for that, especially if you, too, have heard l’appel du vide.
Be sure to stick around for the mid-credits and post-credits scenes.
