There’s not much I can say that isn’t a spoiler, but here’s my cryptic hint: This is a horror movie about a scary shadow monster attacking a family in their home as much as Where the Wild Things Are (Jonze, 2009) was about a boy who escapes to a fantasy land populated by giant monsters.
Unfortunately, the main characters in both of those movies are generally unlikeable. While Max (Max Records) is forgivably unpleasant because he’s a boy trying to gain a measure of control over the world around him, you don’t discover why Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler) is so unpleasant until the last ten minutes of the movie. Once I realized the truth of the story, I kinda didn’t think it was worth it. Deadwyler doesn’t have much support from either of her co-stars, either as actors or as characters, so there’s kinda no one to root for.
Sorry I’ve been away so long – side hustles, stage acting, and college all take time. I’ll catch up soon on other movies I’ve watched lately, including Mickey 17, Moon, and a couple of others.
